Seven-Segment-LED with SPI
![]()
LED7 is a 4-digit 7-segment display with Serial-Peripheral-Interface, short SPI. The hardware consists of four shift registers, four seven-segment displays, 33 resistors, two capacitors, 4 connector rows and the board.
Its function is simple: The shift registers (74HC595) switch the cathodes of the LEDs to ground. Each LED has a series resistor to limit the current. Via SPI the appropriate bit patterns are shifted to the LEDs. These patterns are latched until they get changed again.
LED7 is cascadeable (theoretically to infinity... ). The output drivers of the 74HC595 can be switched off. A PWM signal at pin 3 (off) allows the display to be dimmed.
